Kester Lees KC acts for the University of Cambridge in obtaining a 12 month final injunction against protest encampments in Cambridge
On 23 July 2025, Kester Lees KC (leading Yaaser Vanderman of Brick Court Chambers) acted for the University of Cambridge in securing a 12-month final injunction against protests at the Old Schools site, the Senate House and Senate House Yard, and Greenwich House in Cambridge. This follows the earlier grant of a four month interim injunction which was due to expire imminently.
Following a one day hearing, and the intervention of Liberty and the European Legal Support Centre, Mr Justice Butcher agreed to grant summary judgment for the University and to make the injunction final until the end of the 2025/2026 academic year. His Lordship's reasons will be published in due course.
Kester was instructed by Samuel Maw and Chris Brand of Mills & Reeve LLP.
Kester previously acted for three Cambridge Colleges in their respective applications for interim and then final, injunctions in respect of related protests, incuding the judgment in Trinity College v Persons Unknown [2025] EWHC 1577 (Ch) on 23 June 2025.
Kester also acted, together with Taylor Briggs, for the University of London in its successful claims for a possession order and an interim injunction in respect of a similar protest encampment in University of London v Harvie-Clark & Ors [2024] EWHC 2895 (Ch).
